COMPLAINT DETAILS (from renter) |
About 3 weeks ago in my apartment I began experiencing bites on my body that could not be explained. After a week of getting these bites, I contacted my rental office who sent a maintenance worker into my apartment to inspect which returned no results of bugs. The following week the rental office sent an exterminator who did an inspection of the apartment only finding a bed bug casing on the frame of my bed. After doing an inspection of my own before the exterminator inspection, I found a single bug which was bagged and confirmed by the exterminator to be a bed bug. A round of treatments were scheduled immediately for the following week which the property manager informed me would be my responsibility to cover at a cost of $350. The formal letter that was provided to me regarding the treatments stated that there was no evidence of bed bugs in any of the other surrounding apartments which holds me liable. The letter also states that I could be held liable for future costs if the bugs are not eradicated after treatment. I do not feel responsible for these cost because of the following reasons: I have been a resident for 3 years without an issue until recently. There has been no travel that would promote the infestation of bed bugs nor has bed bugs been found in my bed. There are multiple entry ways for bed bugs to travel in from other avenues such as openings under the main doorway, openings into my apartment from other apartments (below), on-site laundry facilities, maintenance staff entering apartments to perform maintenance/routine inspections when not at home, just to name a few. The rental office has been more than helpful with providing treatment to rectify this issue, however I do not personally feel liable for the costs and do not want carry any on-going liability for any treatments that will need to be done to totally resolve this issue.
