Wont return deposit, and I did not take the appartment

By David P

I gave Mr. Salema a $500 security deposit on September 9, 2012 for an apartment at 1576 Main street Apt C, West Warwick, RI 02893.  I was supposed to move in on November 1, 2012.

Three days later, i discovered I was unable to take the apartment.  I called Mr. Salema to inform him and asked for my deposit back.  Mr. Salema then informed me he did not have it.

I sent a letter of demand with a copy of RI residential landlord tenant act (RIGL 34-18-19) on 9/25/12, in which Mr. Salema put in in an envelope and mailed it back.  I do not know why he did this, other than a demonstration of arrogance.

I have since left a voice mail asking if we could work this out.  He, in return sent me a text saying "don’t bother me".

The next logical step to do would be to file a complaint with a mediation agency. There are a few that can be found on the internet. A good sample would be the RPA. Filing a complaint would help you solve the problem immediately.
