Question about pro-rated rent and if I have to pay

By john

The landlord of the apartments I will be moving to is charging me for a full month of rent this month. They will not have the apartment ready till 07/05/12, but they are making me pay for the full months of rent. Am i legally responsible to pay rent for days I did not occupy a apartment or should it be prorated.

They also say according to them the apartment is not ready needing new carpet and counter tops.  I was told possible i could move on the 3rd but when i called to check status they said it will be ready the 5th.  so i will be paying for 2 days i dont occupy apartment again when lease is over in june 2013.  They never stated that I would be resonsible for full month rent when moving on the 5th.
They never stated that I would be responsible for full month rent my question is am i legally responsible for paying full month rent if they dont allow me to move in till july 5th.   I understand I am responisble to pay monthly rent but monthly rent is calculated by the time I occupy apartment right?  so when would pro rated rent be a option?  so if my lease term begins on the 5th i am still responsible for full month?
