Regardless of the financial situation, legally, because your parents co-signed the lease– they are now responsible for your cousins actions.

The first thing they should try to do is contact their niece to get her to take care of the problem. She should be held responsible for her actions.

If for some reason they can’t get your cousin to take care of the problem, AND they can’t afford the $2000 rent fees for early lease termination; they can file a complaint with the RPA. The complaint option will allow your parents and the landlord to come up with a fair arrangement and agreement, thus saving your parents credit and most likely getting management to drop many or all of the charges.

Good luck!! You’re going to need it!
