My landlord claims different deposit amount…
By Diana Esparza
Good afternoon!
It has been well over 30 days after I left my house and I still have not received my deposit back yet, my roommate tried to keep contacting my landlord and she kept making up excuses and apologizing because she simply did not have the money. We were trying to be nice and we just have been waiting and waiting. Finally, now that she has the money she claims that we only gave her a 450 dollars deposit and not the 650 dollars that we did.The amount of 650 dollars is actually on the contract but she says that she needs a receipt, check or money order or any other type of proof that 650 dollars was the amount. She keeps coming out with excuses saying that she heard me telling her that it was only 450, wich of course I did not tell her, and she also claims that we made some sort of agreement about the deposit, which of course is not true. I am very troubled by her making up all these excuses because I never even tried negotiating the deposit in the first place, she asked for 650 deposit plus first month rent which was 850 and that is what we gave her. While I was going through my papers I actually found the receipt she gave us for the first month rent and I finally after making memory I remembered that she did not give us a receipt from the deposit since the amount was precisely on the contract. We gave her everything on cash. I really need some advice because I do not want to be taken advantage of but I do not want this to get out of hand, I just want the amount that is fair for us to receive since we did leave the house in very good conditions.
Thank you so much and I look forward to your answer
