Landlord not Returning Security Deposit

By Single Chick

I gave my landlord 30 days written notice with my last months rent that I was moving. I called them the day I vacated letting them know the keys and my new address were in the kitchen. They have not returned my security deposit and won’t take my calls. (90 days later!!)Did I give proper writen notification when I vacated? Was I wrong because I called them and did not mail a letter within 4 days.

Thanks

It sounds as though you as a tenant have followed the proper security deposit guidelines. Most likely your landlord is non-compliant with the deposit refund law. I’m not sure about your State but here in Maryland we need to account for the deposit within 30 days or we can get fined. You may want to file a complaint in order to get the RPA involved, they can probably get your landlord to pay up. Theres a link at the top of the page to file a complaint, good luck.

Can’t add a whole lot to this question… Sandy you pretty much covered it. Renters have right to know what happened to their money, even if they lose it to forfeiture. You still have the right to know exactly why you are or aren’t getting your rent deposit. I think your state has the same 30 day requirement, so you landlord may even be liable for damages and fines… Nothing else, you could teach them a lesson.
