Do I have to pay this?

By jennifer

I am renting an apartment and the lease agreement ends June 30. The lease states that the tenant has to give 60 days written notice before the end of the lease, informing the apartment complex whether they will be renewing the lease, or if they will be vacating. I turned in the notice 60 days prior to the end of the lease letting them know we would be leaving June 30 as the lease states. Now that it is almost time to move out, they are telling me they have no written notice on record and that we will be responsible for paying the rent for 60 more days AFTER we have moved out. EVEN THOUGH I turned in this notice and THEY lost it. We already have a new place, so staying in this apartment for another 2 months is not an option, but neither is paying rent at both places. What should I do?
