Bed Bugs in Sofa. Landlord problem?

By Dave

I am a landlord.  I have a house that has never had bed bugs.  I rented it 7 months ago to a group of three young people who have been  great so far.  They called me this week saying that they found a bed bug near their sofa.  They saved it and called and "expert" who also identified it.  My position is this:  They have been there seven months with no problems before.  They brought the furniture into a house that was empty for a month before they moved in and no bed bug activity for the first seven months.  They, of course, want me to pay for treatment.  My position is that they brought them in so they should pay to have them removed.  I told them to get rid of the sofa right now.  I gave them permission to do what they needed to do to get rid of them but it is their responsiblity.  I would sure like some comments because I want to be responsible landlord but I also don’t want to get taken advantage of.
