Carpet Damaged in Flood, Now Landlord is Trying to Hold Us responsible
By JE
We recently moved out of a house we had rented for over seven years. Two summers ago, when Colorado had all that aweful flooding, we had minor flooding in our basement. My husband spent hours vacuuming water with the shop vac to keep damage minimal. An insurance guy was brought out by the landlord and assessed the damage. We have no idea whether the landlords recived funds, but no repairs were done. As we moved out our things a number of carpet stains were revealed from our belongins sitting on damp carpet and the water damage to the wals was much more evident to us. Now the landlords are trying to say that we are responsible for the carpet. Besides bringing up to them that the carpet was a minimum of 8 years old and likely depreciated fully, how do we fight this? The carpet upstairs is worn as would be expected with very minimal stains.
