What are our rights?
By Liz
Here’s the story….my fiance and I live in Palm Beach County, Florida. We’ve lived in the same townhouse for 1 year and 3 months. We had a 1 year lease and though we contacted our landlord about signing another lease, he’s never gotten back to us so we are now month-to-month tenants.
Our landlord has been under foreclosure proceedings for the past 9 months or so. He decided to try for a short sale and the townhouse was put on the market. An offer was made very quickly and we were told the buyer was interested in keeping us as tenants. Therefore, we stopped looking for a new place as it seemed we would be able to stay. The realtor and our old landlord both told us it would still be 2 months before the sale was complete.
Shortly thereafter, our landlord informed us that the sale would actually be complete in 3 weeks and we’d need to either move out by then or contact the buyer to set up a new lease. We contacted the realtor representing the buyer and asked about signing a new lease. Instead, the realtor informed us that the buyer now wants to gut the townhouse and redo it…therefore they no longer want us as tenants.
Are they able to force us to leave on such short notice? Since they had previously told us we could stay as tenants, it seems unreasonable to now only give us 3 weeks to find a new home. Any thoughts?
