Making sure the rental unit is in a safe place
By Tenant
Every tenant should feel safe inside and outside his rented apartment or house, and it is the landlord’s responsibility to ensure the safety of his tenants. It is the tenant’s very right to experience the enjoyment of renting and living in the unit to his own accord.
Safety issues vary from different locations i.e. urban areas have a more higher cases of crimes in the neighbourhood while rural areas safety concern include mobile phone coverage and access to medical care.
Here are some questions you need to do ask the landlord before moving in.
- Is the area safe to live? Assess the area first before deciding to move in to be sure you know what you are getting you and your family into. You can do like a trip if you have a vehicle around the area just to check what happens in the neighbourhood. Calling the police station and ask for the crime rate and crimes made on the area where you want to rent would be helpful. Reading the local area would also be helpful for your determination if the place is safe or not.
- Are the building/ apartment safe? Make sure that the rental unit is structurally stable and is fit to live. Also check the locks on all the windows and doors of the unit. It would also be best if you tell the landlord to change the locks and all the security codes if there are any after moving in. Don’t forget to make sure that your outside area has a porch light on and you can install motion sensors to detect any movement outside the house after you went to bed.
- Is the building safe from fire? Contact your local fire department to know if your rental unit was recently inspected for fire safety. If not then ask them to do an inspection for you.
