Black mold being ignored
By Michelle
I live in Seattle, been in the same apartment for almost four years. The black mold has emerged from behind paint and in our windows. My son is a preemie with lung issues. The landlord told me once the mold is our fault because there is too much moisture in the house, I should open my windows. With a baby in the house? No. Then he said if we put screens on the windows that would help. (Right, because I’m THAT stupid.) And last we spoke he said he’d get us a dehumidifer…still waiting. I just discovered a new bed of mold under the toilet tank and above the shower.

Are you sure it’s black mold? If it is, then you can contact your local housing and health departments about it. It is the responsibility of your landlord to provide you with a safe and healthy environment as stipulated in all tenant laws in all 50 states. Black mold is his problem and he has to work on it. The problem is huge enough to even be a valid reason for you to break the lease agreement. You can even sue your landlord and possibly collect for damages. Another option would be to file a formal complaint against him in order to spur him into action. |
