landlord will not pay for bed bug extermination
By Dre
I live in northern Virginina in a high rise complex and for the past few months I have been waking up itching. I went to the hospital and they could tell me nothing but that they thought it was a fungal infection and they prescribed me lotrimin. The itching continued, waking up literally scratching my skin off, when one moning I woke up and found the culprit on my shirt. I threw out my mattress and contacted the building management and landlord and they informed me that it was financially my responsibility to take care of the extermination. My lease is up the end of this month and with moving fees, I am financially unable to come up with the $500, or sacrifice my deposit to take care of a pest issue (actually parasite) that I believe should be on the onus of the landlord and building in profiding a safe living environment. Can you help with any information? I have gon to Home depot and sprayed my tiny 400sq ft studio and taped up the murph bed so that hopefully they cannot escape to other areas. I am washing all of my clothes and disposing of my couches, which is another hit financially.

Hi Dre! Normally when it comes to bed bug infestations the one responsible to pay for the treatment is the landlord unless proven otherwise that the tenant brought the bed bugs in. I suggest that you file a complaint against your landlord for not treating the bed bugs. You can file your complaint with The RPA, I heard they are way cheaper than filing a lawsuit plus they provide fast and prompt resolution to this kind of problem.
