Sharing tenants rights information

By TayTay

I was wondering if it was illegal for a landlord to share a tenants rights information, isn’t there a privacy policy or law protecting the renter from that information being shared?

Personal information should never be shared. There could be some serious violations if the landlord provided your social security number or other information that could be used for identity theft. If the landlord just shared information such as number of pets or things of that nature, then it probably isn’t an issue.

What exactly did the landlord share??

the landlord put my and three other tenants full social security number, and full name on the lease. Then he emailed the lease as a pdf to all three tenants.

i am worried about identity theft/fraud. What steps could I take to protect myself?

Hi DL. If the option is there on the lease to fill the SSN then won’t be a problem, but if he has fill up the SSN number and should have given to you only and not the other two tenants, this is breach of privacy of tenant. You can report your landlord on this link:

Ask you landlord is you are the one that is going to share his personal details with other landlords or tenants how would that feel like. So is the way your privacy is important to you. Good luck
