House falling apart
By Bran
I moved into a rental home a week ago. We did a quick walk through originally and knew the place was an older house, but did not realize until we moved in that everything is in horrible shape. In the first 2 days, our kitchen sink and dishwasher was not working. I called the property management emergency repair line and had a plumber out the next business day. We went 3 days without a working sink/dishwasher. I was unable to wash dishes for that period and had to eat out instead of at home. Once that was fixed, I began making a list of everything that was falling apart or already broken. I sent the list along with pictures to the property management and asked them if they knew that all of these things were not working or needed repairs. They stated they did not but would begin getting permission from the owner. Every day since then, I have had issues with something breaking or not being usable. Yesterday the toilet broke. There has been a smell coming from the sinks and toilets for 3 days and today we discovered a pipe had burst under the house. It is completely flooded under our house and the smell is horrid. A plumber came out and said he could fix it in one day but he would have to wait to hear from the owner. Until then, I again cannot use the kitchen sink, the clothes washer or the dishwasher. I don’t have the money to keep spending to go out and they have not given me an eta on when they will be done. They claim to have painted the place before we moved in, but the paint job is so horrible that their is streaks all over and paint on windows and appliances. The windows were painted shut and need new cranks so I am unable to open or close them properly. I am paying a lot for rent and feel that all of these issues should have been addressed before allowing someone to move in. Do I have any legal rights or is there any action I should take?
