Bed bugs and your rights as a tenant
By Sarah Williams
I have been living in my apartment for 15 months and have positivley confirmed that this unit has bed bugs and carpet beetles. I had speculation for around 7-8 months. When informing my landlord of the matter that something was biting me and my 4 yr old daughter, he was quick to not give much concern and said, it was all on me to take care of the problem. I got multiple inspections, to no avail, meaning they said I didnt have bed bugs but did have carpet beetles. The only thing the landlord did do was take the carpet out in bedrooms but the problem persisted.
I need to know my rights in this situation… I want to just move out but dont want these critters to go with us. I want to be reimbursed from the inspections, throwing out of goods, and buying product to eliminate the bugs…. Can I get any of these things done by law?
Any feedback is appreciated. Thank you!

A landlord should provide a habitable place to live in. That should be in your lease. In terms of what you wanna do, it’s your call. Talk to your landlord about it first maybe he/she just need some food or something.. if you think that’s not gonna do any good then filing a complaint can never be that bad. file it through RPA. Have it sorted out. |

Never bring bed frames, mattresses, box springs or upholstered furniture found on the street into your home. Immediately wash and dry your clothing on hot settings or store it in a sealed plastic bag until you can. Ask your landlord to seal any cracks and crevices with caulk, to prevent bed bugs and other pests from entering. Check your rental agreement to see if it contains language that gives you the necessary tools to efficiently handle an outbreak of bed bugs. Many leases will contain language that specifies what the resident’s responsibility is in terms of pest control treatment. |
