$280 late charges after check returned because of fraud. Extenuating circumstances?

So, just like the title said, I have a $280 late fee incurred because the check I wrote was returned, because my checks had been stolen and so the account was frozen. This seems extremely excessive, but I guess I signed a lease saying I’d be a good lil !@#$% or they’ll toss me in the street. I know it is definitely not fair, but the question is, is this legal?

Get a letter from your bank explaining the situation and a certified check for the original amount. If they still don’t care then you know that they have a low rent capacity and don’t really care about you. Then again, I have never met a management company that cares about a resident once the lease is signed.
