Can the old complex do this?

My roommates and I moved into this apartment and the carpet was very stained and old. they said they cleaned it and they could not replace it. we asked right away if it could be replaced. we lived there for a year. no complaints and we always paid rent on time. we didn’t have pets and we didn’t stain it, it was in really bad shape. after a year we moved out. they didn’t do an inspection with us present and a few months later we got a letter saying we owed 550 for new carpet. how can this be our fault when it was like that when we moved in and they knew it was bad because we said there where many stains on the checkl list we filled out when we moved in? now the collection agencie is saying we need more documentation of it being bad and the rental check list is not enough to prove we didn’t stain the dirty old stained carpet. this was in Albuquerque New Mexico.
