paying utilities that the landlord says I owe?

By tricia

My landlord sent me a notice staing I owed 447.00 dollars in utility payments for gas, electric, etc. I have never rented anywhere where the landlord decides how much you pay without giving you the actual utility bill. i am concerned because I am renting the bottom half of a two storry home with a hughe family who live upstairs and I am alone in a small one bedroom space. I am charged outrageous fees for utilities that I am not sure how he is coming up with those amts! do I have any recourse here?

Hi Tricia. If you haven’t agreed to it or signed anything about these fees then they can’t charge you for that. One thing as well is why can’t your landlord provide you an invoice for the payment. So that you will know what you are paying for. Your landlord can pass along gas and electricity as long as he does not charge you more than the total utility bill. :)
