Love my apartment but not my neighbor…
By Mike
I have lived in my upstairs apartment for 12 years now. Very nice place, very quiet until recently. For the first 11 years the sweetest elderly couple lived below me. Very quiet and we had no trouble letting each other know if the noise levels got out of hand. Unfortunately the husband passed and his wife moved in with one of their children. I was sad and of course sorry to see them go. Shortly afterwards an elderly woman and her son moved in. Things were relatively quiet for the first 6 months. Any loud banging or door slamming I brushed off as "people make noise". Well, as time went on, the slamming became more frequent and annoying. I took the first step and asked the son if he could keep the "door slamming" down and basically received an "Ok" as an answer. The slamming continued and actually seemed to be more frequent. Anytime a light switch was turned on, the wall had to be slapped first. Anytime a door was closed, it had to be slammed. Anytime a cuppord door was closed, it had to be slammed. You get the idea… At this point I decided to contact my landlord and left 3 messages asking if she could get back to me. No response after a week. Finally out of frustration I tried again and actually got a hold of her! She was "sympathetic" and said she would take care of it. I never received a call back so I assumed she called them and things would get better. I should have known better. I now feel that it is being done on purpose. Subsequent calls to the landlord have not been returned. Out of desperation I spoke to the elderly woman and asked if I had done something wrong to warrant all this banging and slamming. She basically replied that she had no idea what I was talking about and wouldn’t give me the time of day. I explained that I would call the police in the future and she didn’t seem to care. The banging continues and I feel like I am out of options. Yeah, I can call the policie but this isn’t loud music or domestic abuse and generally this all takes place before 10PM. Any suggestions or advice? I know moving is the most obvious solution but this has been my home for 12 years!
Thank you,
Mike

Sorry to hear about yur problem, but it seems to be an all too commom problem these days. We are in the same type situation, except that the noise (VERY LOUD TV NOISE) is occurring every night for the last two years we have been living here. We have complained to Management, to no avail. In fact, after many many written and verbal complaints, we were contacted by their Attorney who told us to move if we were that unhappy with the situation!! We are retired, and couldn’t afford to move at this time, and couldn’t take the hardship and stress a move would cause us. They seem to have the mentality of “Kill the Messenger”, instead of getting to the bottom of the cause of the problem. The one complaining the loudest seems to get nothing done, but are told to leave if they don’t like it. It’s not just, but then it doesn’t surprise me in today’s world. Everyone looks out for themselves, and no one cares who they hurt in the process. We have thought about moving but fear we would only find the same type situation or worse. Good Luck! |
