Additional deposits
By austin tenant
I moved into this really cute little duplex rental in the beginning of this year, and after a month or two we started to notice that there is a wiring problem in the 30 year old home. After contacting the landlord several times by phone, and him coming in to tell us that he can not replicate the issue (stove shocks people, plugs dont work, and switches dont work) we finally called the city and had a code inspector come and do an inspection. The isvestigator deemed our rental and sub standard living and cited the landlord telling him that he has 14 days to come and fix the problems. LL came promptly the day he was cited and fixed everything, but now he wants to double our deposits. And for everyday we do not pay him the extra money he is charging us a penalty fee of 25 a day. Can he do this? What can I do?

Are we talking about security deposits? Because those can only be charged once and that’s when you moved in. Your landlord had to repair the wiring because it was a violation of your city code. Since it was a violation, the he should shoulder all the expenses because it is his responsibility to provide you with a habitable environment. I don’t think it’s right for him to charge extra, ask for additional security deposits and even a penalty fee. You should file a formal complaint against him. Organizations like the RPA may help. |
