Security Deposit Refund Issues
By CP
I vacated my apartment about 2 1/2 months ago in compliance with the terms of the lease. I paid a sizeable security and pet deposit, I have yet to receive any notification regarding the deposit. I have sent two emails and a certified letter asking for a status. I have not received any replies. What is the most effiecient way to get my security deposit back?

filing a complaint would be the best way for you to get your security deposit back. Security deposits must be returned to the tenant once they left the rental unit given that there are no major damages to the rental unit. You actually have two choices in filing your complaint. You can either file your complaint with small claims court or you can file through a mediation company like the RPA. |

Your landlord is only given 21 days from the date you moved out of the rental unit. If your landlord fail to give you the itemized list of the deductions made to your security deposit then he do not have the right to withhold your security deposit. Also if there were no major damages made to the rental unit that is beyond normal wear and tear then your landlord should give you back the whole amount of your security deposit. If I were you I would definitely file a complaint against your landlord. |
