seasonal campground tenant
By Tami
We found out after we moved our camper to a seasonal park that the owner charges over double what the electric company charges for the electric usage. (we actually found out after we received the bill, because I couldn’t believe how high it was, so I went online and checked for local rates). They never gave us a lease or a list of fees pertaining to the electric bill. They only gave us rules and regs, which show all the others fees they charge and mentions we would be billed twice during the season for electric usage. We paid the first bill, because the owner threatened if we didn’t he would turn the electricity off. We left the park at the end of the season and got the final bill. We don’t want to pay it. We already paid what the electric company charges for all the kilowatt hours we used in the first payment we made mid-season, and actually, the park owes us some money back. The park has now filed a claim against us in Special Court? Anyway, in NJ, must a seasonal park owner disclose these charges prior to billing us? We paid the first bill, because we were fearfull he would turn the service off, does that make us obligated to pay the final bill to them?

I was wondering if you ever received an answer for your electric usage. our park owner is doing the same thing and we cannot find out if its legal what they are doing without retaining counsel. |

In the state of KY it is illegal to make a profit off of metered electric. We charge our seasonal campers exactly what they used at the same rate as our electric company. You may want to check into the laws in your state to see if what they are doing is even legal. |

I’m sorry I have not responded. I only received an email today notifying me there were others posting on this thread. Our camper was in NJ, and the landlord sued us for the electric bill. We won in court, because he did not inform the tenants of the additional charges related to the electric usage. The judge told them they could charge anything they wanted, even if the charges were significantly higher than what the utility company had charged them, but they must inform the tenants in advance of all charges, which of course they did not do. We were actually awarded a small over-payment we had submitted when we paid the first electric bill mid-season. |
