Landlord doesn’t do anything about rewiring a house

I’ve been living in a duplex built in the early 1900’s for the past 6 years. I’ve known our wiring is old. I can’t even have an air conditioner window unit because the wiring won’t support it. In the summer, I regularly blow a circuit and the breaker takes overnight to recover and cool down. I’ve reported this each time to my landlord but nothing has been done. In December, one of my outlets sparked as I was unplugging something, the landlord replaced the outlet. Monday, the bathroom outlet killed a hairdryer, 1500 watts, and melted the wiring. I was told that the wiring cannot support anything with more than 700-1000 watts due to fire danger. Even a hairdryer needs 1600 nowadays and most are 1875. The landlord continues to drag his feet about rewiring a house. What are my rights around the electrical updates and what can I do?

Yeah i guess those wirings needs to be replace then. I can’t live like too :(. Anyhow you should have a nice talk with your landlord. Get a proof that will point out the issue. At some point that you can’t get a hold of him. Try filing a complaint through RPA.

One of the main responsibilities of the landlord is to enforce safety in their apartments and properties. In your situation, they do not promote safety. You can ask them repeatedly to deal with the updates and explain why because if this goes on and its not remedied, there is a possibility for fire. Most electronic devices now require more power source. If they do not listen to you, you can file a complaint here in RPA or get someone from the legal world to help you out.
