Month to Month What are my rights PLZ HELP!!!!

I have been renting this basement apratment for almost 2 yrs.  Landlord has never given me a receipt which i have asked for.  My son is coming from Tx and I informed her of this… She stated that if he comes she will not allow this and that i would have to leave.  I kindly informed her that I would need a 30 day eviction notice.  Is this right?  I cannot have my son and wife and 1 yr old baby come to stay with me until he can get settled? I offered the landlord more rent money.  Which she kindly refused.  So do I have any rights?  There is no contract.  Doesnt she have to give me a 30 day in writting or can she just tell me to get out?  She still has my deposit.. I really do not want to do anything against them as they were friends..  But again I need to know what if any rights I do have.  Plz someone tell me.
