lanlord wants repairs to apt after fire

By Chris

My problem is that during november of last year and electrical power cord sparked and started a fire in my apartment while i was at a friends house, the bedroom recieved heavy heat damage and the rest the apt was smoke damage, there was no damage to any other units in the complex. i did not have renters insurance, and my landlord states i violated my rental agreement by not having rentyers insurance; no were in my contract can i find a clause that states i MUST have renters insurance as part of my rental agreement. Now they are charging me for repairs, late fees and the remainder of the the lease contract after they evicted me for violation of the lease agreement. they never filed any fomal eviction paperwork and would not accept my december rent.

what are my options at this point?
