Landlord charging me illegal?
By anonymous
Hello everyone!
I have an interesting question and I hope I can get some answers. I’ve lived at a duplex for almost 2 years. There have never been any real issues with the landlord until now. The unit I live at is a duplex with a detached garage seperated for both units. We share the water bill but seperate electric bills. The issue is that last week, the neighbor blew a fuse for his garage and noticed that the power went out on our side of the garage as well. When the power was restored, the power came back to both garages. Both garages were connected to the neighbors meter. We have a refridgerator in the garage as well as some lights. The neighbor did a used a calculator from the utility website and figured out how much they had overpaid for the last 2 years. The landlord is now trying to charge us for the money owed to our neighbor. Although I understand the situation, I do not feel that I owe the landlord any money. It was an issue with the wiring that no one was aware of, therefore I feel that it’s the responsibility of the landlord, not mine. Ultimately, I do not feel that I am responsible since it was not billed to my meter. Thank you for your time and any help will be greatly appreciated.
