DANGEROUS HARRASMENT
By MAIDEN MAD
I rent month to month. Landlord not on premises. People upstairs took over apartment from relative and it seems that the landlord did not know this, perhaps because the relative is still paying the rent but is not physically on premises. They are harassing me. One of them has been in trouble with the law. I do not feel safe. Landlord has been advised via email and phone calls, but is not doing anything so far. Nice person but not very pro-active or hands on. What can I do to protect myself. I have periodically been late with rent but am not in arrears.

Apartment neighbors can be a big problem. I wonder if your landlord required you to pass a background check before moving in. If so, you should ask him why he allowed someone with a criminal history to move in. (Although, you will want to have some proof of criminal history and not just assumptions) You can use this a ammo to tell your landlord that you will seek constructive breach if he fails to provide the same standards of living that you were required to meet. You should also let him know that you do feel unsafe, but be specific and tell him why. It should be something more than saying your neighbors are throwing empty beer cans etc. Why not file a complaint if the problem is that bad? |

So what you’re saying is, your neighbors just moved in without consulting the landlord? this is a serious issue because if you were harmed in anyway you wont know who these persons are and what are their records. You have to inform the landlord that if this is a case you may file a complaint against him because he failed to make sure he check the background of his tenants. also if you are being harassed by your neighbor please report him to the police for legal action. |

Please take this issue with your landlord and ask him, how come possible people who have not provided any of their proof to stay at his apartment and having some criminal background. Even though their relative paying the rent of apartment, he should be concerned and even atleast ask the payer to provide their details to him, you can rate or report your landlord on this site, RPA has these features, As you mentioned you pay rent not on time, but also not in arrears, which is good.. You can give this as a proof and also can be important in your documentation, if you file a complaint. Have words with your landlord, and say him the consequences or problem he can face in future, if not tackled out this kind of neighbours and tenant, that harass other tenants. |
