Can’t pay my rent, what to do?

Hi, 

I have signed a 2 year lease upon relocating to the united states – NY – about 6-7 months ago. 
things did not go too well, and my wife and i were not able to find a job, mainly due to having to take care of a completely disabled son. We have signed a 2 year contract for the house, and have made every payment, but can no longer afford paying the crazy prices or utilities. 
We have one of two options, going back to our country, or moving to Texas to live with my brother temporarily. The lease on the other hand says that if we terminate the rent of the 2 year agreement, we need to pay the full amount due for two years.
What could i do to not mess up my credit rating if the landlord was not understanding? 
Can this mess up Both ( my wife and my ) credit ratings? 
i would appreciate any advice, were planning on moving out ASAP

Are you and your wife both on the lease? The credit rating will only affect the person who’s on the lease agreement. With regard to what you can do, you can check your lease agreement and see if it allows a replacement tenant. Basically, a replacement tenant would be someone who would live in the house and take your lease instead. Of course, the replacement tenant need to be approved by your landlord first prior to moving in. But if your landlord is making it too difficult for you to move out even if you’re way within the terms of the lease agreement, you can file a complaint against him. RPA has that option through their complaint center.
