cancel lease
By 6515union
I had a burglary in my apartment recently and now I don’t feel safe in my apartment in Denver, CO anymore. I understand that burglaries can happen and that the landlord cannot be held responsible if proper precautions have been taken. However, in this case I feel that the landlord’s negligence contributed to this burglary.
The situation:
Pretty much anybody can get into the garage which is attached to the apartment complex. Renters get a device which allows them to open the garage door. However, it is easy to access the garage without such a device since cars are constantly entering or leaving the garage. In order to access the apartment building from the garage one has to have a key. On the door from the garage to the building on the 1st floor can be opened without a key. Opening this door without a key will trigger an alarm. The problem is that this alarm was not working for at least a week. Hence, it was easy for anybody to access the garage and the apartment building. I feel that this display of negligence and incompetence on the landlord’s side should allow me to cancel the lease earlier for security reasons.
I would greatly appreciate any advice.
