Can they change the gate policy???
By jem4407
Hello! I have been renting an apartment for about 3 1/2 years now. I have had NUMEROUS problems in the past, so maybe this is just the last straw. The community I live in has a gate. In the past, to open the gate you needed a FOB (for those of you not familiar, a FOB is like a clicker that opens the gate when you are near to it) or you could use the call box. For renters there was a 4 digit password to use at the call box (in case you forgot it or your FOB wasn’t working) and for visitors you could call the renter and they could let you in via their telephone. Upon exiting the property, the gate would open automatically (no FOB or call required). NOW they are requiring that a FOB be used to EXIT the property and there is no longer a password for residents to enter the gate. Not only is this a big inconvenience when having guests/deliveries/service, since now I have to escort people out of the community, but it is also scares me. There have been a few times in the past where by FOB would not work. Luckily either the office was open and I could get it fixed or someone was entering/exiting or I could use my password to get in. I am deeply concerned that there is going to be an emergency and I will be trapped in my community! If it happens late at night, after office hours and with no one going in/out, I could be stuck with horrible consequences. Are they allowed to change the policy to make a FOB required to exit?? Thanks so much for your help!

Yes, apartment communities can change gate policies anyway they want. There is probably a logical reason for the change. Most likely to make the property more secure. Possibly they’ve been having people scale the gate, steal cars and then drive out with no problem. Now, if they implement the new policy and everyone takes their opener with them after parking the car; it would make it much more difficult for thiefs to steal cars from your apartment complex. (I don’t know why they changed your policy, but there could be a very valid reason as I just mentioned.) |
