Flooding, mold and chance for recuring flooding
By jeff
Our Basement apartment was flooded two weeks ago. nor us or the landloard had flood insurance. We lost half of our things to the water. He has been working on the apt so we can get back in by tomorrow. The apt looks nice but the smell of mold is in the air. " its in the walls" Also the reason why it flooded has not been corrected because he dosenot have the cash to do so.. He put us up at a hotel for the last 15 days but will not pay for another day… I want to know my rights about the situation… Is it leagal for him to fix the apt with out removing all the mold 100 percent. Also is it legal for him to leave the cause of the flooding unaddressed…
thanks
Jeff

Black mold can have lasting effects on your health, so it is important to solve the problem. Mold problems are common and can be resolved by your landlord. I’ve dealt with mold problems due to flooding before and can say that one of the most important things to do is to properly dry the apartment. That will require industrial de-humidifiers. If your landlord failed to do that you are almost guaranteed to have a long-term mold problem. Flooded apartments are frustrating, but you do have rights. If you can’t work it out with your landlord (which it sounds like is happening) then, you should probably protect your rights by filing a complaint with the Rental Protection Agency. Most likely that will be what you will need to do to enforce your rights. (there is a link to the complaint form in the menu.) |
